IBM ThinkPad
bought by
Chinese firm
The purchase of IBM's PC Division for $1.7 billion by Lenovo, the largest PC maker in China, has been approved by the U.S. Government. After initial concerns about security issues, the Committee on Foreign Investment (CFIUS) unanimously approved the deal recently.
The IBM PC Division manufactures the IBM ThinkPad, considered by many the "Cadillac" of notebook computers--many of which are used by U.S. Government agencies.
IBM intends to take a 18.9 percent in Lenovo as part of the deal. The Chinese company is also to reincorporate in the U.S. The restructuring is to help the ThinkPad compete globally with Dell and Hewlett-Packard.

Number one redneck sport . . .
NASCAR's fans spreading through
out the world
Known by many as the number one redneck spectator sport, NASCAR debuted in Mexico City recently to a spectator crowd of almost 100,000. The "Telcel-Motorola 200", an 80-lap event, was held at Mexico City's Hermanos Rodriguez Autodrome, which was originally built for Formula One racing.
The race, an effort by NASCAR to win over Mexican fans and expand their North American market, was won by Martin Truex, Jr.

NASCAR, once considered mostly a regional redneck spectator sport, has now grown to a multibillion dollar industry. The racing organization  has announced intentions to expand their market to Canada, and rumors have it that tracks may be built in more diverse areas of the United States, including New York City and Washington state to California.
Other countries eyed as potential targets for expanding the NASCAR fan base include Germany, United Kingdom, Brazil and Japan--where NASCAR has recently debuted as well.

It must be Spring time!

At Panama City Beach, Florida--also known as "The Redneck Riviera"--it is not hard to tell when Spring is coming, one just needs to check the license plates in local traffic. When you see the plates change on vehicles from Canadian and occupants with gray hair to northern states like Michigan and Wisconsin with the bass on their car stereos booming--Spring has arrived in the "Spring Break Capital of the World".
Times are changing, however, in this Gulf Coast town located in the Florida Panhandle with "Mom and Pop" motels with $15 to $20  per night rooms being rapidly replaced with high rise condominium resorts with $150 to $200 suites.
Also Club La Vela, which bills itself as the "Largest Nightclub in the USA" announced recently that it has sold out to developers and will close soon, making this the last Spring Break season. The night club often has served as the epicenter of the Spring break and MTV crowd in recent years. Owners have stated that they may relocate the club further inland. Mayor Lee Sullivan  admits that the planned closure is "part of a bigger trend" working against the annual migration of college students to the small coastal town.
